Evaluation Pt. 7

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt from the progression from it to the full product?
In our preliminary exercise we was asked to create a simple scene in which shows our skills of the 180 Degree Rule and the Continuity aspect of editing. This has to include both parts of the acting to be as smooth as possible, remembering some positions and for another cut-scene to be having the same animations. We included many two shots and tried to include a close up however we only had little time to create this material to show we understand the editing parts of video. We made our continuity work really well in general and this made the film look good. However we did have one issue where Ellis’ hand was in two different places between the two cut-scenes. This was bad and we figured out that filming would be a lot more difficult than it would usually be. I think that we could have improved on several moments in that scene.
The main task was so much bigger than the preliminary exercise so in this it would be a big issue for me to have minimal errors, but throughout this there was many. We broke the 180 Degree line several times because of the closed space in the room. Throughout the 3 minute clip it had many mistakes. I am going to list them below:
  • The first frame inside the entire movie had an error with aligning all the character, the lower third and the background be in the same frame. This was a mistake however it didn’t ruin the film as YouTube exported it and processed it and inside that process, it must have encoded it to look a bit different compared to the final product on local storage.
  • The rest of the mistakes are in the interrogation room because of how small it is, we had issues with taking some shots. We had very limited amount of shots that we could take and some in particular included two shots with enough space to include some background behind the characters. We also had issues with close-up shots as we would have to move the character backwards and it wouldn’t look the same when cutting into another shot. It would look very glitchy and it would put the audience off the plot of the film.
  • We had issues with David’s face being in the same position when it’s cut into another shot. This isn’t a big issue however I did question it several times and we had no way we could make it look like it was intentional, it looks like it was clearly an accident.

The main task had so much more issues, this was due to poor judgement and questionability of the shots that we had taken. The preliminary material was so much better than this and we need to realise that on another project that we might do, we have to spend a lot more time getting the right shots. We tried to fit the entire film project that we worked on in a single day and this caused massive issues in the film overall and as intense as it is, it’s still got it’s issues overall.
